What is a crown?

A crown is a cap made of porcelain. We place it over a sharpened tooth or molar to restore its shape and function. With a crown we can replace a single tooth or molar. A crown also offers a solution when the original tooth does not offer enough grip for a filling. With a crown we can strengthen and repair the tooth or molar.

You need a crown if:

• You suffer from discolored or poorly formed teeth and want to have them repaired.

• Your tooth or molar has broken off.

• Your tooth or molar has been partially lost due to tooth decay and therefore offers insufficient support for a filling.

What is a bridge?

A bridge is a durable replacement for one or more teeth. If you are missing one or more teeth, we can place a bridge to fill the open spaces in your teeth. A bridge consists of two crowns and a bridge intermediate part. We place the crowns on the prepared teeth on either side of the open space in your teeth. Subsequently, the intermediate bridge part serves to fill in the missing teeth.

You need a bridge if:

• You are missing one or more teeth.

• You have trouble chewing because of the open spaces in your teeth.

• You no longer dare to talk or laugh because you are missing teeth and want to improve the appearance of your teeth.

The treatment

Placing a crown or bridge takes place in two visits. Below we explain more about the steps we go through during the visits:

1. Tooth or molar grinding
   First of all, we grind or remove part of the tooth. In this way we make way for the crown. This is done under local anesthetic.
2. Scan
   We make a scan of your jaw. This is done with a mouth camera. We send this scan digitally to the dental laboratory, so that they can make a virtual 3D model. On this model we will eventually make the crown or bridge.

3. Determine color
   We determine the desired color in consultation with you. The final color also depends on where the crown or bridge will be placed. Is it placed in the front or back of the mouth? We always discuss the possibilities with you in order to achieve the most beautiful and best result. With a crown over the front teeth, the ceramist will often make the color in your presence completely to your liking.

4. Temporary crown
   After preparing the tooth or molar, you will receive a temporary crown with which we can protect the prepared tooth or molar. You wear the temporary crown until the actual crown or bridge is completed. Often the crown is ready the same day. Then no temporary crown is needed.

5. Place crown or bridge
   When the crown or bridge is ready, we can place it in your mouth during the last appointment. Adjustments are still possible here. Are you satisfied with the result? Then we fix the crown or bridge with a special cement.

Maintain your crown or bridge

To enjoy your new crown or bridge for as long as possible, it is important that you take good care of it. You do this by maintaining good oral hygiene. It is important that you clean your teeth, including a new crown or bridge. Brush your teeth carefully with a soft toothbrush. Focus especially on the edge of the crown or bridge. Then use toothpicks or brushes to clean the spaces between your teeth.

The cost of a crown or bridge depends on the material we use and the cost of the dental laboratory. The condition of your teeth and molars also affects the total price. In addition, teeth and molars sometimes have to be extracted, which is included in the total costs.
